Retirement Portfolio Construction Checklist

Building a retirement portfolio involves more than selecting investments or generating income. Retirement introduces challenges that differ fundamentally from wealth accumulation and therefore requires a different way of evaluating portfolio construction.

A useful starting point is to ask whether the portfolio addresses two complementary stewardship responsibilities.

The first is Retirement Income—how sustainable retirement income will be delivered throughout retirement.

The second is Retirement Portfolio Resilience—how the portfolio has been constructed to address sequencing risk and behavioural survivability so investors can remain financially and emotionally invested throughout changing market conditions.

Both functions matter. A retirement portfolio designed to generate income should also consider whether it is resilient to adverse market sequences that can permanently affect retirement outcomes.

Our Retirement Portfolio Construction Checklist provides a practical framework for advisers and investors to review these complementary responsibilities and begin thinking about retirement portfolios through the broader discipline of Retirement Portfolio Resilience.
